PERIODONTAL CARE IN FORT SASKATCHEWAN, AB

COMPREHENSIVE GUM DISEASE TREATMENT

Cornerstone Dental Centre has been providing periodontal care and treating gum disease in Fort Saskatchewan since 2007. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, can be painless in its early stages, making regular check-ups crucial for prevention. Many people are unaware they have this condition, which affects the gums, teeth, and surrounding bone. Learn more about gum disease and how to protect your oral health.

WHAT CAUSES PERIODONTAL DISEASE?

The primary cause of periodontal disease is the buildup of plaque, which can harden into tartar if not regularly removed through brushing and flossing. Once tartar forms, it can accumulate along the root surfaces, where bacteria thrive. Professional cleaning is required to remove the bacteria and tartar that contribute to gum disease, as brushing and flossing alone are not enough.

HOW IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE DIAGNOSED?

At Cornerstone Dental Centre, we use X-rays and a periodontal probe to diagnose gum disease. Our dentist will examine the color, shape, and overall condition of your gums. The depth of the crevice between your teeth and gums should measure between 2 to 3 millimeters. If this crevice deepens beyond 3 millimeters, it forms a "pocket," which indicates gum disease.

During the exam, we’ll measure the pocket depth to assess the extent of the disease. X-rays will also monitor your bone levels, as advanced gum disease can lead to uneven bone loss around the teeth.

SIGNS YOU MAY HAVE PERIODONTAL DISEASE

In its early stages, periodontal disease often presents no symptoms. However, common warning signs include:

Chronic bad breath
Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing
Swollen or tender gums
Receding gums
Loose teeth
Changes in spacing between teeth

PROVEN GUM TREATMENTS TO RESTORE ORAL HEALTH

At Cornerstone Dental Centre, we provide effective gum treatments using scaling tools and ultrasonic equipment to remove plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria below the gum line. These treatments are designed to prevent and treat gum disease, promoting healthier gums. We may also prescribe oral antibiotics to aid in the healing process. Additionally, a home care program will be customized to support your continued recovery.

Treatment may take more than one appointment, and in some cases, numbing may be used to ensure comfort. As your gums heal, they will tighten around your teeth, restoring your oral health. Contact us to learn more about our advanced periodontal treatment options.
